An area of the central Peloponnese, both mountainous and fertile. Leading cities are Tegea, Mantinea and Megalopolis (founded in the 360s BC). In the 4th century an Arcadian League was formed, against Sparta. It was the archetypal rustic area of Greece, home of the god Pan and setting for much pastoral literature.
