Apelles

No Images available at present.

A Greek painter, working mainly at Ephesus in the later years of the 4th century BC. His most famous works were portraits of Alexander the Great, studies of Aphrodite and various trompe l'oeil subjects. He was judged the greatest painter of antiquity. No works have survived and his general style can only be judged from the better works preserved in Macedonia, mainly of the 3rd century BC, and copies for Roman walls (Pompeii, etc.).
