Aigina

Temple of Aphaia, Aigina.Map of Greece and the Aegean. Ian Hiley, Beazley Archive.Island in the Saronic Gulf, south of Athens. A major temple of Aphaia, apparently assimilated to Athena, stood near the coast, with important late archaic sculptures; another, to Apollo lay near the main town on the west. Aigina produced no pottery of its own, other than valued kitchen ware, but was the home of a distinguished series of 5th-century sculptors. The Aiginetans were from earliest times renowned as traders.
