The Athenian Treasury at Delphi

Photo of Athenian Treasury

The Athenian Treasury at Delphi.

This Doric building was constructed after about 490 BC. Most of the metopes show the adventures of Herakles and Theseus. The other metopes and the acroteria (roof sculptures) show Amazons, who fought battles agaist both these heroes. Some fragments of sculpture from the pediments also survive: chariots and a frontal Athena from one pediment, and a fight from the other.
