  • CAVI Collection: Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum 3695.+
  • CAVI Lemma: RF cup. From Cerveteri. Douris. Python, potter. First quarter fifth. 500-490. Ca. 490 (Eichler).
  • CAVI Subject: The Armor of Achilles: Int.: Neoptolemus and Odysseus. A: Ajax and Achilles quarreling. B: the vote, with Athena in the center.
  • CAVI Inscriptions: Int.: along the left half of margin: Δορις εγρ(α)φ(σ)εν{1}. A: below the top margin: κο (for hο) παις καλος. B: below the top margin: Χαιρεστεατος (for Χαιρεστρατος) καλος{2}. On the reserved foot profile: Πυθον{3}.
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} alpha without cross bar; the sigma nearly a line. {2} Reichhold leaves the space for τος vacant; Masner dots ο̣ς̣; Beazley gives all letters. {3} B.-O. gives all inscriptions complete and without any errors. {4} the text in Buitron gives a dotted delta.
  • CAVI Comments: Ex Oest. Mus. 325. + fr. in Villa Giulia (added to B by D. Williams). Unusually sloppy writing for Douris, but the writing on his early vases tends to be sloppy; it becomes neat in the middle period (see AttScr). On the subject of the awarding of the arms of Achilles, see B.-O. 13-14. Attic alphabet with four-stroke sigma. Delta normal{4}. Rho with and without tail. The letter forms taken from FR.
