  • AVI Record Number: 3450
  • CAVI Collection: Erlangen, University 707.
  • CAVI Lemma: Fr. of RF stamnos. Peleus Painter (Polygnotan). Third quarter fifth.
  • CAVI Subject: A: at left, hands holding flutes; in the middle: upper part of a dancing dwarf; at right, a raised arm with a krotalon.
  • CAVI Inscriptions: A: above his head and the raised arm: [hιππο]κλειδης{1}.
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} this is the form generally given, but why not: [Ιππο]κλειδης? Perhaps because the Polygnotan workshop resisted the Ionic alphabet; see AttScr (1990), 111. A bit lower, there is a trace where I read a doubtful alpha from the photo, but I am not at all sure that this is a letter.
  • CAVI Comments: This is the (stage) name of a real dwarf (Beazley), after the famous Hippokleides of Herodotean fame. Differently Lippold. For dancing dwarfs see Robertson (1979) 130.
  • CAVI Number: 3450
  • AVI Bibliography: Photo. — Lippold (1937), 44 ff., pl. 14. — Beazley (1939), 11. — ARV[2] (1963), 1039/6. — AttScr (1990), no. 760. — Dasen (1990), fig. 13. — Matheson (1995), 437/PE9, pl. 180.
