Building or zone: Portonaccio sanctuary - Temple of Apollo
Position: Ridge
Roof element: Acroterion bases
Remarks: Large hollow base with semicylindrical curve to longitudinal underside (RH 52, RW 77), smaller curved openings at bottom of side walls for insertion of cover tiles from slope, and round holes in side walls (2/side, Diam 6) near top of curve. Near front end, curved, obliquely rising wall forming raised open frame (H 19, RW 28), decorated on outer side with volutes in relief, ending in cutout edges with leaf between forward-curving volutes. Outer surfaces painted black, with cream ridges of volute edges. Originally placed over ridge tile, probably at end of ridge. Form suggests that it might have formed throne for seated figure.
