  • CAVI Collection: Madrid 11,265.
  • CAVI Lemma: RF cup. Aison. Last quarter fifth. Ca. 420.
  • CAVI Subject: Deeds of Theseus: Int.: Theseus and the Minotaur, with Athena. A: the bull; Procroustes; Cercyon. B: Sciron; the sow (Phaea) and the nymph Crommyo; Sinis.
  • CAVI Inscriptions: Inscriptions horizontal and mostly above heads: Int.: Αθηναα. Θησευς. Μινω{1}. In the exergue in BG: Αισων :* εγραψεν{6}. A: [Θη]σευς. (The bull not inscribed). Θησευς. Προκροστης{2}. Θησευς. Κερ[κ]υων{3}. B: Θησευς. Σκιρων. Κρομ[μ]υω{4}. (Θ)(η)σευς. Σ̣ινις{5}. Ossorio's readings differ: A: the first Θησευς is complete. Μινως. B: Θησευς. Κιρων. The sow: Κρομυων. Σινις.
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} But Alvarez-Ossorio has Μινως, with sigma 2 (= Z); other letters Ionic. Leroux has ΜΙNΩ and restores Μινω[ταυρος]. {2} the dr. in Leroux, pl. 26, shows Προκρο^σv.της, with a spear intervening and odd spacing of the ff. letters. {3} so both text and dr. in Leroux. {4} Κρομυω, Leroux, text and dr. {5} for one Theseus, Leroux has Θ . . . . . (in the text only). {6} ARV[2] wrongly gives Psi 2 (see the chart in AttScr).
  • CAVI Comments: ARV[2] reverses A and B. Note that some figures on B are not inscribed. For the Theseus cycles see Froning (1992a), 131-54. Theta once with 1 1/2 strokes in the circle.
  • CAVI Number: 4901
  • AVI Bibliography: FR (1904–32), iii, 50 f., 48, fig. 21 (after Antike Denkmäler ii, pl. 1 [[noch anpassen, evt. eigener Eintrag]]). — Leroux (1912), 110/196 (facss.), pls. 25-28 (25: ph. of Int., barely shows inscriptions; 26: dr. of A, with inscriptions; 26: ph. of detail of A, shows 2 inscriptions; 28: dr. of B, with inscriptions) (much bibl.). — J.R.
