CAVI Lemma: RF lekanis. From Nola. Painter of London E 494{1}. Third quarter fifth.
CAVI Subject: Seven Muses in three groups: 1. Polyhymnia, perhaps holding a book roll
(nearly lost){2}. A seated Muse(3); Kleio with flutes. 2. Euterpe and Thaleia
facing, one holding a wreath. 3. Erato with a box addressing Calliope.
CAVI Inscriptions: To right of Polyhymnia's lower body; Πολυ[μ]νια. In the same position for the
Muse with flutes (although she faces left): Κλεω. In the same position for the
Muse without attributes: Ευτερπη. Similarly for the Muse holding a wreath and
facing left: Θαλεια. [Ερα]τω{4}. Likewise for the Muse holding out a chest:
Καλλιοπε{5}.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} "A fine artist, in spirit akin to the Achilles Painter and the Persephone
Painter," Beazley. {2} see also Immerwahr (1964) (it could be a chest). {3} the
name is lost. {4} After C. Smith; I did not see the letters. {5} vidi; not
transcribed by C. Smith. The final epsilon is very faint.
CAVI Comments: All inscriptions are horizontal and to the right of the figures regardless of
how they are facing. Mixed alphabet (mostly Ionic except for the final vowel of
Kalliope?). Some Letters are disjointed.
