The Gems Database is intended to support research on ancient and neoclassical engraved gems (intaglios) and their replicas.
The database aggregates information from a variety of past CARC research projects and archival collections and does not offer a representative overview of ancient gems. It mainly comprises modern replicas (impressions, casts, electrotypes, etc.), particularly impressions made in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for collectors, connoisseurs, and travellers to Rome. Most of these are held in CARC's own archives. Where possible, information is also given about the original gems (most ancient, some modern) which are documented by these replicas.
Please consult the individual gems pages for more information on the dates and histories of the copies and their originals.
