The sacred island of Apollo, where he and Artemis were thought to have been born. Rich and important in the Archaic period, its later period of prosperity, especially of its private houses, depended on its special status for Hellenistic and Roman merchants. It is a major source for early sculpture (kouroi, lions) and architecture, and for Hellenistic art.
