CAVI Lemma: BF amphora. From Vulci. Leagros Group. Last quarter sixth. 510-500.
CAVI Subject: A: Heracles and Iolaos in a chariot, with Athena. B: five bearded komasts
making music.
CAVI Inscriptions: A: in front of the heroes' faces: Ιολεος. In front of their lower bodies:
hερακλες. Under the horses' bellies: Αθεναια. To left of the horses' necks, near
Athena: hερ[μ]ες(1)(?). To left of Hermes' face: κ(α)λος. B: above the leftmost
komast's head: Μιλιχος, for Μειλιχος{2}. By the second: Τελοκλες. Near the third
komast's face: Μοσαον{3}. Behind the back of the fourth: Διοδορος. To lower
right of the fifth: Χρεμες. Under the foot, Gr.: see CVA. Johnston (1979),
90/2B,40 reads it quite differently: ΑV [[lig.]] (ΑN or ΑΥ) plus reversed Attic
lambda.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} so CVA in the index; but the dr. and photo show: (.)ιο[.](ε)ς. The
inscription is much disturbed by breaks. The first letter resembles a smeared
reversed sigma, the fifth, a four-stroke sigma, the last a reversed sigma. {2}
LGPN ii, s.v. Μειλιχος. {3} perhaps for Μουσαιος, with the last letter a sigma
placed sideways, although it looks like a clear nu.
CAVI Comments: A and B are clearly written by different hands: see AttScr (1990), 75 and
171.
