CAVI Lemma: Frs. of RF lekanis. From Athens. Mikion Painter (Euemporos?). Mikion, potter.
Late fifth.
CAVI Subject: Contest of Athena and Poseidon. Fr. a: Athena; olive tree. Fr. c: male god;
hill and plant; man's calf.
CAVI Inscriptions: Fr. a: to Athena's right: Αθηνα[ια]. Below this, two-liner: Ευε[μ]πο[ρος] |
εγ̣[ραφσεν(?)]. Fr. c: to right of the god, above the plant, two-liner:
ε[ποιησεν] | Μικιω[ν].
CAVI Comments: Frs. a - e. I follow ARV[2], where the signatures are restored from the
similar lekanis Athens, Pnyx 124 (P 349) [ARV[2] 1341/2] which has: Μικι[ων]
εποιη[σεν]. Beazley apparently separates the name of Athena from the signatures,
while Langlotz, because of the proximity (and a near-stoich. arrangement of the
lines), had restored a dedication: Αθηνα[ιαι ανεθηκεν] | ευε[μ]πο[ρος· ο δεινα]
| επ̣[οιησεν]. He also considered Mikion the painter, but that is superseded by
the Pnyx fr. Note that a third group of frs., Acr. 1051 (ARV[2] 1341), which is
said by Beazley to be in a different style, has Μικιω[ν] and below it γραψας;
Beazley thinks this may have been followed by ανεθηκεν or the like. It does not
quite fit the restoration of Acr. 594.
