Decoration: A: NIKE ON COLUMN, ATHENA B: ATHLETES RUNNING
Last Recorded Collection: Athens, Ceramicus: PA589D
Publication Record: Eschbach, N., Statuen auf panathenäischen Preisamphoren des 4. Jhs. v. Chr. (Mainz, 1986): PL.37.1 (PART OF A) Revue Archeologique: 1972, 288, FIG.3
CAVI Lemma: Frs. of BF Panathenaic prize amphora. From Athens, Ceramicus, near the
Dipylon, found 1966-67. Unattributed. 413/12 rather than 327/6: Polemon archon
(Eschbach); Hegemon archon (Frel).
CAVI Subject: A: Athena to right (parts); column figure on left column: Nike (part). [Some
frs. must be from B: foot race? They show two running feet to right and a foot
of one standing(?).]
CAVI Inscriptions: A: fr. b: kionedon: on left side of fr. (placed by E. near the left column):
[--- Πολ]εμων̣{1}.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} This is rightly preferred by E., after Valavanos (orally). Frel had read
Ηγεμων but that should be Ηγημων. The reading could also be: [Πολ]εμων̣ [ηρχε].
Fr. b seems to preserve no other decoration, to judge by the small photo.
CAVI Comments: Simple writing, not calligraphic. Ionic alphabet.
CAVI Number: 1747
AVI Bibliography: Frel (1972), 288f., fig. 3,a-j. — Eschbach (1986), 145/cat. 73, pl. 37,1 (fr.
b shows inscription).
