Decoration: A: AMAZON IN PATTERNED SUIT, WITH AXE AND BOW, WARRIOR, SHIELD WITH APRON, DEVICES, CLUB, EYE B: AMAZON IN PATTERNED SUIT WITH SPEAR AND SHIELD, DEVICE, LEAF
Last Recorded Collection: London, British Museum: E295
CAVI Lemma: RF Nolan amphora Related to Charmides Painter. First quarter fifth.
CAVI Subject: A: two Amazons setting out. B: a third.
CAVI Inscriptions: A: between the Amazons: Καλλι[α](δ)ες καλ(ο)ς{1}.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} ARV[2] reads Κ(α)λλιδ̣ες καλ(ο)ς, but lists the name as Kalliades on p.
1587, compares Athens, Acr. ii, 1498, and refers to CB (1931–63), ii, 8, C 1.
CVA prints Καλλιοες after the BM cat., where the reading is Καλλιδης καλος,
which is followed by CVA and ARV[1] 927. {2} Beazley in ARV[2] says that the
letter is rather shapeless and might also be an alpha; I do not think so. [[man
könnte auch an Καλλι(ο̅́)δε̅ς mit Kurzschreibung denken]]
CAVI Comments: Two alphas lack the cross stroke. Delta is a triangular blob, clearly
intended for delta{2}. The omicron is distorted.
CAVI Number: 4558
