CAVI Lemma: BF amphora. Rycroft Painter. Last quarter sixth. Late (Beazley).
CAVI Subject: A: Apollo mounting a chariot; Artemis hands him the cithara; behind the
horses, Hermes greeting Apollo; in front of them, Leto. B: Dionysus with maenads
and satyrs.
CAVI Inscriptions: A: starting from behind the top of Apollo's head downward along his back,
facing him: Απολ[λ]ονος, retr. In a similar position on Artemis' right:
Αρτεμιδος. Behind Hermes' head, curving upward over the horses' heads: hερμου.
Above Leto's head, nearly vertical: Λετους{1}.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} all inscriptions done from the photo in Shapiro. The last two letters of
Leto's name are unclear in it, but they are certain.
CAVI Comments: I believe the descriptions of A in ABV and Shapiro are erroneous. Note the
diphthong `ου'; see Threatte (1996), 260.
