  • CAVI Collection: Athens, N.M. Acr. i, 816.
  • CAVI Lemma: Fragmentary BF amphora. From Athens. Unattributed. Last third sixth.
  • CAVI Subject: Procession to sacrifice: left to right: boy holding a rope tied to a bull's foot; man and boy playing lyres; bearded flautist; male carrying a large amphora; bull; behind the bull, a wreathed youth with a basket; in front of the bull, a wreathed boy, probably with an apron, holds a branch and a rope of the bull.
  • CAVI Inscriptions: Behind the leftmost boy: [---]ες. Behind the boy with the lyre: [--]α̣ι̣ο[ς]. Betweeen the flautist and the boy playing the lyre: Εχσεκ[ε]στος{2}. Above the flautist: Nικα[υλος?]{1}. Above the head of the youth behind the bull: [---]ος. Below the bull's neck (referring to the rightmost boy, though not facing him): [---]εβιος{3}.
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} my suggestion. Graef suggests: [η δεινα ε]νικα [φυλη] or Nικα[---καλ]ος, no doubt taking the -ος from the next inscription which won't do as the figures were named separately. {2} the rope interferes. {3} Bechtel suggests Αρχεβιος, Αλκεβιος, or Αγχεβιος.
  • CAVI Comments: Exekestos is an unusual name which may be related to the name Exekias, on which see Boardman (1978), 24 (Shapiro).
  • CAVI Number: 0993
  • AVI Bibliography: Graef–Langlotz (1925–33), i, no. 816, pl. 49 (dr.). — Shapiro (1992), 55.
  • CAVI / AVI Data from Henry Immerwahr's Corpus of Attic Vase Inscriptions (CAVI), updated by Rudoph Wachter's Attic Vase Inscriptions (AVI)
