CAVI Lemma: RF cup. From Vulci. Phintias. Deiniades, potter. Last quarter sixth. Ca. 520.
CAVI Subject: Int.: satyr. A: Heracles and Alcyoneus. B: the Struggle for the Tripod.
CAVI Inscriptions: A: on Heracles' left, the first four letters horizontal and retr. (except for
the rho), the last letters down: hε(ρ)ακλες. To left of Alcyoneus: Αλκυονευς,
retr. Below and parallel: Φιλτιας εγ(ρ)αφσεν, retr. On Hermes' left: hε(ρ)μες,
retr. On his right, near one handle, in large letters and two words, the second
word down: Δειν[ια]δ̣ες | [ε]ποιε̣σεν. B: On Heracles' left, in large letters:
hερακλεες, retr. To right of Apollo's back: Απολλον.
CAVI Comments: Nearly all inscriptions have letters of different sizes. Note the peculiar
rho's. The vase is earlier than the Pioneer vases and the writing is larger and
less hasty, though not neat. Threatte (1996), 184, notes the two spellings of
`Herakles' on the same vase in his discussion of -κλεης.
