  • CAVI Collection: Paris, Cab. Méd. 535.+
  • CAVI Lemma: Frs. of RF cup. From Tarquinia. Kleophrades Painter. Ca. 500. Early (Beazley).
  • CAVI Subject: Int.: a young warrior putting on his greaves. A-B: Heracles and the Amazons.
  • CAVI Inscriptions: Int.: to the warrior's upper left: καλ[--], retr. To his upper right: καλ[--], retr. To right and left of his shin: [--]εσ[--]{1}. Higher up, to right of a lance: [--]σ[--]{1}. A: καλο̣[ς], retr.? Χσανθιππ[ε]. hε[ρα]κλεες{2}. [Ανδρο]μα[χε]. [--]υσ[--]. [--]α[--]. [--]ομ[--]. On the reserved foot profile, in BG: Κλεοφραδες :* εποιεσεν :* Αμασ[ιδος hυυ]ς :*{3}.
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} so Beazley (1933a). [699 has a sigma, according to de Ridder.] {2} so Bothmer; Beazley has hε[ρα]κλεε[ς]. {3} Beazley notes (as had Six) that exactly seven letters are missing. The last letter is fragmentary, but a certain sigma. The above reading is Bothmer's in GettyJ. Earlier readings are: Κλεοφραδες εποιεσεν. Αμασ[ις εγραφσε] or [εγραφ]σ[ε] Gerhard, revived by Hartwig. Αμασ[ις καλο]ς, O. Jahn, revived by Klein. Αμασ.......ς, Beazley, although he preferred Six' reading to Jahn's. Six read: Αμασ[ιος hυυ]ς. Bothmer has now shown that the genitive should be in -ιδος. See further his article in JPaulGettyJ.
  • CAVI Comments: + 699 and other frs. Four-stroke sigma in the signature only. Robertson gives the history of Hartwig's attribution of the signature to a younger Amasis. Robertson 84 says that this and no. 536+ are a pair of cups, one of which is inscribed with Kleophrades' signature, just like the pair by Douris, Berlin 2283 and 2284.
