CAVI Lemma: RF cup. From Vulci. Proto-Panaitian Group (Beazley){1}; Onesimos (Williams).
Euphronios, potter. Ca. 500.
CAVI Subject: Int.: two Amazons running. A-B: Heracles and the Amazons.
CAVI Inscriptions: Int.: under the arms of both Amazons, curved and referring to the left Amazon
(a hoplite): ḥ[ιπ[π]]ολυτε, retr. To left of the right Amazon (an archer): Θερο,
retr. A: Heracles and three Amazons: to right of the right leg of the leftmost
figure (an Amazon): hιπ[π]ο, retr. hερακλες, retr.{2}. Above one Amazon:
Ανδρομαχε. A third Amazon is not named. B: three Amazons come to the rescue:
over the shield of the leftmost: Καλ[λ]ι[...], retr.{3}. The central Amazon (an
archer) is not named. To left of the right Amazon's face (hoplite): Ευοπε, retr.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} Onesimos (Williams). {2} the inscription continued on Hippo's shield (C.
Smith); I have no note of this. {3} so Bothmer; C. Smith restores Καλ[λ]ι[οπε];
I had thought of Καλ[λ]ι[π[π]ε]. Apparently omitted in CVA, GB 17?
CAVI Comments: Hartwig attributed the cup to Euphronios; Beazley, at first to the Panaitios
Painter, later to the Proto-Panaitian Group; Williams, to early Onesimos (in
JbBerlMus). The lettering is larger and more firm than on earlier vases
attributed by Williams to Onesimos; the alphas and lambdas are different, while
the kappa is similar. According to Threatte (1980), 46 this is the vase cited as
London no. 820 by Kretschmer (1894), 98 with the wrong reading ΗΡΑΚΛΕς (with
3-stroke sigma).
