  • CAVI Collection: New York 31.11.13.
  • CAVI Lemma: RF/WG squat lekythos (tallboy). From Athens. Eretria Painter. 430-420. Ca. 420 (Richter).
  • CAVI Subject: Three zones: Top (RF, fragmentary): uncertain subject: a man in a chariot abducting a woman, with six divinities. Middle, WG: Achilles mourning for Patroclus, and the bringing of the armor by Thetis and Nereids. Bottom, RF: Theseus and the Amazons.
  • CAVI Inscriptions: Richter–Hall: Middle: mostly above the heads: Αχιλλευς̣. Πατροκλος. Κλυμενη. Ψαμ̣αθη̣. [Θ]ετις. Γαλ[ατ]ε(α){1}. Ευπ(.)[--]{2}. Κ[υμοδοκ]η̣{3}. Bottom: Μιμνοσα{4}. Ε[υ]μαχη. [Αλκ]αν[δρος]. Κ[λυ]μενη. Θησευς. Ιππολυτη. Φα[λη]ρος. Χαροπ̣η. Αμυνομενη. Ευπο[λ]ις. Δωρις. Ευδω[ρ]ο[ς]. Εχεφυλη{5}. According to L.-H.: Middle: ... Ψαμαθ̣η̣. The sixth Nereid: Γαλ[η]νη̣{6}. The seventh: Ευ[--]{7}. The last: Κ[--]{8}. Bottom zone: ... Ε[υ]μα̣χ̣η. [--]ο[--]. No name for the fourth figure. Α[..]αν[--]. No name for the sixth figure. Κ[λ](υ)με̣νη. No name for the ninth figure. Ιππο[λ]υτη̣. [--]ρος. Χαροπη. No name for figure 13. Δορις [sic]. Ευδωρ̣ος. ... [The names not mentioned here are = the readings from R.-H.]
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} The last alpha of Galatea lacks the cross stroke. {2} Ευπλ̣[οια](?), rather than Eupompe, Richter. The fourth letter preserves the tip of a slightly diagonal down-stroke, suitable for an Attic lambda. {3} Richter: restored after the pyxis, London E 774, by the Eretria Painter. But R. reads the last letter wrongly as epsilon. {4} See Beazley (1947). {5} Bothmer's readings; they supersede Richter's. {6} L.-H. wrongly restores an epsilon. She prefers Galene to Richter's Galateia. {7} Ευ[πλοια] or Ευ[λιμενη]. {8} Κ[υμω](?). Richter restored K[ymodoke], but L.-H. thinks there is not enough space.
  • CAVI Comments: Bottom zone: L.-H., fig. 81, draws the inscriptions in relation to the figures, mostly horizontal and mostly above the heads, but sometimes to right of the figures. The inscriptions in the lower zone are hard to read. Ionic alphabet.
