201950, ATHENIAN, Malibu (CA), The J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu (CA), The J. Paul Getty Museum, Greenwich (CT), private, M. and W. Bareiss, Rome, market, 86.AE.170
CAVI Subject: Ext,: between eyes: A: busts of Heracles and Athena. B: busts of a man and
two women (one with polos){2}. Under one handle, a cock; under the other, a
boar.
CAVI Inscriptions: A: above the left eyebrow: Nικοσθενες εποιεσεν{3}.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} Vacano (1973) attributes a number of BF eye cups potted by the early
Nikosthenes to a Painter of Villa Giulia 63613; some of the attributions are
questioned by Clark; see CVA, p. 63. {2} ABV does not identify the figures;
Para. suggests Hebe and Hera, perhaps Zeus, although the beard is poor for Zeus.
Bothmer in GV Bareiss suggests Hades with Persephone and Demeter. {3}
M&M-Auction (1961), pl. 41/133, brackets the first epsilon.
CAVI Comments: Ex S.80.AE.300. Ex Bareiss 82. Ex Roman Market, Meggen, Käppeli, and Bareiss.
Beazley (ABV 235) compares Vatican 456, a similar cup with heads on A. The hand
is certainly different from Painter N's. Matheson identifies the heads on B as
Demeter, Kore and Triptolemos. Schefold: Demeter, Persephone, Hades. Bruckner
and Beazley following him: Hera, Hebe, Zeus. Brommer leaves the question open.
CAVI Number: 5005
