Decoration: Body: KOMOS, DRAPED YOUTHS, ONE PLAYING PIPES, ONE LYRE, WOMEN WITH KROTALA, DOGS, NONSENSE INSCRIPTIONS
Last Recorded Collection: Reggio Calabria, Museo Nazionale: T130
Publication Record: Chiarini, S., The so-called Nonsense Inscriptions on Ancient Greek Vases, Between Paideia and PaidiĆ” (Leiden, 2018): 102-103 (COLOUR OF BD) Notizie degli Scavi di Antichita: 1911 SUPP., 11, FIG.8 (PART)
CAVI Lemma: BF/WG lekythos. From Locri Epizephyrii{1}. Unattributed. First quarter fifth.
CAVI Subject: Komos of three couples (men and hetaerae); the last man plays the flutes, the
central one has a lyre; the women have krotala.
CAVI Inscriptions: Nonsense: to left of the last man, not facing him: καινετε. On his right:
οουσ. At the bottom: πυγοσυγε. At the top: πο(γ)αγει. At right, vertically down
and facing the first figure: hυβριγ(γ)εσ.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} tomb 113.
CAVI Comments: Probably in Reggio Calabria. The above readings are taken from the dr. in
NSc. and are no doubt not completely reliable. NSc. thinks the inscriptions hide
names; the last is indeed similar to names like Hybridemos, Hybrilides,
Hybristes (PA 13,895-97). The gammas may stand for pi's.
CAVI Number: 7858
AVI Bibliography: Orsi (1911), suppl. p. 11, fig. 8 (dr.).
CAVI / AVI Data from Henry Immerwahr's Corpus of Attic Vase Inscriptions (CAVI), updated by Rudoph Wachter's Attic Vase Inscriptions (AVI)
