CAVI Lemma: Fragmentary RF amphora. From Orvieto. Oltos. Last quarter sixth. Ca. 510.
CAVI Subject: A: The Struggle for the Tripod. B: Ares and Aphrodite remain.
CAVI Inscriptions: A: by Athena's hand: [Αθε]να{1}. In front of her helmet: χαιρ[ε]. Between
Heracles' legs: hερ[ακλες]. Between Apollo's legs: Κ[2-3]φς or κ[αλ](ο)ς(?){2}.
Behind Apollo: χ[αι]ρε. B: in front of Ares: Αρ[ες], retr.{3}. Behind him:
χαιρε.
CAVI Footnotes: {1} why not [Αθε]να[ια](?). The break occurs right after the alpha. {2} CVA
suggests the second part of a kalos-inscription. But the photo shows a clear
phi; hence a name (a kalos-name?) is perhaps preferable. Κ[ονο]φς seems
possible; see LGPNii. {3} so CVA (including the photo); but I saw on Beazley's
photo.: Αρες̣, retr.
CAVI Comments: + Boston 10.219, ARV[2] 54/6, see Para. 326. "The masterpiece of the
painter's fully developed style," Beazley.
