Prothesis

Prothesis or laying out of a body, prior to being transported to the grave. Detail from Attic clay vase c. 9/8th century. New York. Metropolitan Museum 14.15The 'laying-out' of a body. Represented on Attic Geometric grave-marking vases, and on later Attic funeral vases and plaques. The body is placed on an elaborate bed (kline), as that used also for the symposion, and attended by mourners, mainly women.
