Peplos

John Boardman, <I>Greek Sculpture Archaic Period</I>, p.68.A woman's garment, fastened at the shoulders, leaving the arms bare, and open along one side. An elaborate peplos, woven with scenes of a Gigantomachy (battle between gods and Giants), was made in Athens to be dedicated in the Panathenaia to the sacred cult image of Athena on the Acropolis. This was not the same statue as the famous Athena Parthenos.
