Didyma

Map of Greece and the AegeanSite of a major oracular sanctuary of Apollo, near Miletos. The earliest temple, 6th century BC, is one of the largest in Greece, comprising a massive open courtyard with a chapel and secret inner sanctuary. A processional way was flanked by a series of archaic statues of seated rulers and lions (many now in the British Museum). The temple was burnt by the Persians in 494 BC but rebuilt in the Hellenistic period. Its oracle encouraged Diocletian's persecution of Christians.
