An island and city of Ionia off the coast of Asia Minor (Turkey). It enjoyed a great reputation in antiquity for its merchants and its wine; also as the alleged birth-place of Homer. Apart from important Bronze Age sites there are excavated sanctuaries in the south at Phana and Emporio, with early Ionic architectural remains. The ancient town lies beneath the modern.
