The Temple of Aphaia on Aigina
The Temple of Aphaia on Aigina
Aphaia was a nymph of the island of Aigina, sometimes identified with Athena. The Doric temple was built in the early 5th century BC and had two sets of pedimental sculpture, one having been damaged in a disaster, but kept. The sculptures were excavated early in the nineteenth century and acquired by Ludwig I of Bavaria for his new Sculpture Gallery (Glyptothek) in Munich.
